Canal Grande in Venice: The Artery of Venice Between Beauty and History
A Masterpiece of Water
The Canal Grande is the main waterway of Venice. It winds for about 4 kilometers through the city, dividing the historic center in two and connecting Santa Lucia train station with St. Mark’s Square. It is between 30 and 70 meters wide and lined by over 170 historic buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century.
Sailing along it is a unique experience: noble palaces, churches, bridges, and unforgettable views follow one another along the way.

The most fascinating way to admire the Canal Grande is by vaporetto (lines 1 or 2), or for a more exclusive experience, by gondola or private water taxi. The most popular stops include Rialto, Accademia, Ca’ Rezzonico, and San Marco Vallaresso.
For those who prefer walking, several stretches of fondamenta offer enchanting views from land.
